Terms and Conditions of the Calorias App

Last updated: February 02, 2025

1. Overview

Calorias is an application that, from a photo or from the name and weight of a food item, can estimate its nutritional values, useful for managing a food diary and keeping track of what you eat each day.

It also includes a barcode scanning function that allows you to calculate, based on the barcode, the amount of nutrients contained in the weight of that specific food item.

The app does not require the creation of an account. Diary data can be saved to the device’s internal storage, and if you wish, you can also save a backup copy to the cloud (e.g. Google Drive) using the backup function.

Some features (AI recognition, cloud backup, ads) require an Internet connection to function.

2. What the app does

  • Uses artificial intelligence to analyze food photos and provide estimates of nutritional information, weights, and detected ingredients.
  • Records daily meals, their weight, nutritional values, and personal notes.
  • Allows you to manually add ingredients if something was not detected by AI.
  • If an ingredient in a dish is detected incorrectly, it can be removed or replaced with another one.
  • Displays in the diary daily, monthly, and yearly charts for: Calories, Proteins, Carbohydrates, Fiber, Sugars, Fats, Saturated fats, Salt, Sodium, Cholesterol, Water, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (Niacin), Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid), Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine), Vitamin B7 (Biotin), Vitamin B9 (Folate / Folic acid), Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin), Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, Selenium, Iodine.
  • Allows you to export charts and nutritional values saved in the diary to a PDF file to share, save, or print.
  • If the diary is unlocked, it can also work offline for meal viewing.
  • Images are securely sent to Google Cloud servers solely for processing.
  • Images are never sent to servers owned by the Calorias app.
  • Displays ads via Google AdMob to support app development.
  • Manages consent for personalized ads through the consent banner in countries where required.

Note: the nutritional estimates provided by the app are indicative and may not be 100% accurate. As estimates, they may differ from laboratory-derived data for that specific food.

3. Backup and Restore

You can create backup copies of your diary data and restore them when necessary.

What the diary backup includes:

  • Recorded meals with individual foods
  • Nutritional values for each food item
  • Weight
  • Notes

What the backup does NOT include:

  • Food photos
  • Temporary local cache
  • GDPR consent preferences (stored locally)
  • App settings

Important: backups are manually managed by the user. Make sure the chosen storage (e.g. Google Drive) has available space and verify that the exported file has been correctly saved before deleting local data.

Exported backups are not automatically encrypted by the app. We recommend protecting your cloud account with two-factor authentication and storing copies in a safe place.

4. Ads and Monetization

The app is free thanks to the presence of advertisements. Advertising policies and ad types may vary depending on third-party providers (e.g. Google AdMob).

The user can modify ad consent preferences at any time through the dedicated section within the app (Settings → Reset your preferences).

The user has credits available that must be used to access the app’s features and can be renewed by watching advertisements.

5. Technical Limitations

  • No automatic server-side synchronization: to transfer data between devices, use export/import or Drive backup.
  • Backup size and time depend on the device’s memory and Internet connection.
  • Compatibility: some or all features may not be available on unsupported operating system versions.
  • We are not responsible for data loss caused by user deletion, device malfunction, errors during transfer to cloud services, or corrupted backups.

6. Security and Proper Use

The app uses Firebase App Check and Cloudflare to prevent abuse and verify that requests come from legitimate sources. In case of suspicious activity, access to certain features may be temporarily blocked through rate limits:

  • Maximum 100 requests per user every 24 hours
  • Maximum 15 requests per minute per user

These limits apply to most online operations. Normal offline operations, such as viewing local diary data (if unlocked) or accessing settings, are not subject to limits.

7. Liability and Warranties

The app is provided “as is” and “as available”, without any kind of warranty, express or implied. While we strive to keep the app functional and secure, we cannot guarantee complete absence of errors or total reliability of third-party services (e.g. Google Drive, AdMob, Google Cloud, or others).

To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for direct or indirect damages resulting from the use of the app or from data loss. It is the user’s responsibility to perform regular backups and store them safely.

8. Intellectual Property

The app, code, and contents are the property of the Calorias developers. The data you enter in the diary (meals, notes, weight, etc.) remain your property.

9. Updates and Changes

We may update the app or these Terms at any time. To check for updates, please review this page periodically.

By continuing to use the app after an update, you agree to the new Terms.

10. Contact

For questions, reports, or requests, contact us through the Feedback section within the app or by email at: info@caloriasai.com
